Why This Summer's Hail Storms Kept Stopping Near the Mississippi

A stubborn heat dome turned the western edge of the country's heat into a storm highway. We watched it happen week after week.

We repair hail damage for a living, which means we watch radar the way farmers watch rain. And this July we kept seeing the same movie. A line of storms would fire up over the Plains, run hard to the northeast, drop hail across Iowa or Wisconsin, and then fall apart somewhere around the Mississippi. Next day, same thing. Storm after storm hit the brakes at the river while the East Coast just baked.

That was not a coincidence. It was a heat dome.

What a heat dome actually does

A heat dome is a big, stubborn bubble of high pressure that parks over one part of the country and refuses to move. Inside the dome, air sinks. Sinking air kills thunderstorms before they can get going, which is why the middle of a heat dome is hot, still, and dry. Storms cannot punch through it, so they do the next best thing. They slide around the edges.

Forecasters call this the ring of fire. The rim of the dome, where the high pressure is weakest, becomes the track that every storm system follows. Whatever sits under that rim gets round after round of severe weather while everything under the dome itself stays quiet.

Where the rim sat in July 2026

For the first half of July, the dome set up over the eastern United States, and its western rim ran right up the middle of the country. That rim became a 1,500 mile storm corridor from the central Plains through the upper Midwest. Forecasters flagged northern Iowa and central Wisconsin as prime ground for supercells with very large hail, and that is exactly what those areas got.

So if you looked at a hail map this summer and wondered why the damage piled up west of the Mississippi while the East mostly just sweated, that was the dome doing its work. The storms did not disappear. They got rerouted, and the same neighborhoods along the rim took hit after hit.

Repeat storms are sneaky. After the first one, people check their cars. After the third or fourth, storm fatigue sets in and a new round of dents goes unnoticed on a hood that already had a few.
