What Size Hail Causes Car Damage?

A simple size guide, and why even smaller stones can leave dents.

The rough threshold

Car damage generally starts around one inch across, about the size of a quarter. Once hail reaches that size, especially with wind behind it, it can dent body panels and chip paint.

A quick size guide

Pea is about a quarter inch. A penny or quarter is around one inch, where damage often begins. A golf ball is about 1.75 inches and reliably dents vehicles. A tennis ball or larger can crack glass and cause heavy damage across every panel.

Why smaller hail still matters

Size is not the whole story. Wind speed, the angle the hail falls, how long the storm lasts, and how soft the metal is all affect the result. Sub-one-inch hail driven by strong wind can still leave a field of small dents, which is exactly the kind of damage that hides until you see it in the right light.

When in doubt, get it checked

If a storm dropped hail anywhere near quarter size or bigger, it is worth a free inspection. Small dents are easy to miss and still lower your vehicle's value.
