What Is Paintless Dent Repair and How Does It Work?

The repair method that fixes dents without touching your factory paint.

The basic idea

Paintless dent repair, or PDR, removes dents by gently working the metal back to its original shape from behind the panel. There is no filler, no sanding, and no new paint. The factory finish you started with is the finish you keep.

How the process works

A trained technician reaches the back of the dented panel, sometimes by removing trim, a light, or a panel. Using specialized rods and tools, they apply slow, precise pressure to the dent while reading the surface with a light board that reveals every imperfection. The metal is coaxed back to level a little at a time until the dent is gone.

What it works best on

PDR is ideal for hail dents, door dings, and minor creases where the paint is still intact. Because hail damage is usually a field of shallow dents with unbroken paint, it is close to a perfect match for the method.

When it is not the right tool

If the paint is cracked or chipped, or the metal is stretched or sharply creased, traditional body work may be needed for that spot. A quick inspection tells you which panels are good candidates.

Why people choose it

It is faster than conventional repair, it costs less, and it keeps your original paint, which protects resale value. For most hail and ding damage, it is the smartest way to make a vehicle look new again.
