You do not own it outright, but the hail is still your problem to handle. Here is how the claim works and the mistake to avoid.
Whether you lease or finance, the insurance policy is in your name, so the hail claim is yours to file, and it is a comprehensive claim just like it would be on a car you own outright. The difference is that the lender or leasing company has a financial interest in the vehicle, and that shows up in two places: the coverage you are required to carry, and who the repair check is made out to.
Lenders and leasing companies require full coverage on a vehicle they have money in, which means both collision and comprehensive. So if you lease or finance, the hail damage is very likely covered. Your out-of-pocket is your comprehensive deductible, which is often lower than your collision deductible. Check your declarations page to see the actual number.
On a financed vehicle, the insurer often makes the repair check out to you and the lienholder together, and the lender will want proof the repair was done before they sign off. On a lease, the leasing company may want the same. This is normal. A shop that handles hail claims every day deals with lienholder paperwork all the time and can walk it through with you.
Some drivers are tempted to take the insurance payout and skip the repair. On a car you own that is your call. On a leased vehicle it is a problem waiting for you at lease return, when the inspector writes up every dent as excess wear and bills you for it, and by then the insurance money is spent. On a financed vehicle, the lender can require the repair be completed, and unrepaired damage lowers what the car is worth when you sell or trade it. Get it fixed while insurance is paying for it.
Lease inspections are strict about dents. A hail-damaged roof and hood at turn-in can turn into a large excess wear charge. Paintless dent repair is the fix leasing companies prefer to see, because the factory paint is untouched and there is no repaint that a return inspector might flag. Repaired properly, hail damage does not follow you to lease return.
An insurance claim can appear on a vehicle history report. A properly done PDR repair, with no repaint and no replaced panels, leaves the car in factory condition, which is the best outcome for both a lease inspection and a future buyer. More on that in Does Paintless Dent Repair Affect Car Value?
