Dodge County Hail Storm, September 3, 2026: Why You Should Check Your Vehicle Today

The hail fell just before midnight, so most of the damage happened in the dark. Here is what Dodge County drivers should do now.

Late Wednesday night, September 3, 2026, a severe thunderstorm crossed Dodge County. At 11:32 PM the National Weather Service confirmed golf ball size hail in Mayville, 1.75 inches in diameter, with 1 inch hail reported a mile west of town minutes earlier. The storm moved through Mayville, Horicon, Juneau, Beaver Dam, Waupun, and Hartford. Earlier that same evening, separate severe weather had already hit Waukesha, Milwaukee, and Washington counties.

Because the hail came through just before midnight, almost nobody watched it happen. If your vehicle was parked outside anywhere in the Mayville area that night, there is a real chance it took damage you have not noticed yet.

Overnight hail is the kind people miss

Golf ball hail dents nearly every horizontal panel it hits: hood, roof, trunk lid, tops of the fenders. But hail dents are shallow and hard to see in flat daylight. The best check is low-angle light, early morning or late afternoon, sighting down the length of each panel. You can also run your hand slowly across the metal and feel for a field of small dimples. If you find them, you have hail damage, and it does not repair itself.

Why you should not just live with the dents

Unrepaired hail damage lowers your vehicle's trade-in and resale value, and an insurer can factor prior unrepaired damage into future claims. Meanwhile the repair itself usually costs you only your comprehensive deductible, because hail is covered under the comprehensive portion of your auto policy as a no-fault act of nature. Filing a hail claim does not raise your rates the way an at-fault accident claim can, and in Wisconsin you have the right to choose your own repair shop.

Paintless dent repair keeps your factory paint

For hail dents, paintless dent repair is the right fix. The metal is massaged back to its original shape from behind the panel, so there is no filler, no repaint, and no color mismatch down the road. Your factory finish stays intact and your resale value is protected.
