Comprehensive vs Collision: Which Covers Hail Damage?

The short answer is comprehensive. Here is what that means for you.

Comprehensive covers hail

Hail falls under the comprehensive part of your auto policy. Comprehensive handles damage that is not from a crash, things like hail, falling branches, theft, fire, and animal strikes. If you carry comprehensive coverage, your hail damage is almost certainly covered.

Collision is a different thing

Collision coverage pays for damage from hitting another vehicle or object. It does not apply to hail. This is why some drivers who only carry liability and collision find they are not covered for a storm, it is the comprehensive piece that matters here.

How the deductible works

With a covered hail claim, you typically pay your comprehensive deductible and insurance covers the rest of the repair. Because the repair bill is usually much larger than the deductible, filing almost always comes out ahead.

Usually a no-fault claim

Hail is weather, not something you could have prevented, so a hail claim is generally treated as no-fault. In most cases a single comprehensive claim does not raise your rate the way an at-fault collision would, though specifics depend on your insurer and state.
